Walsh University has been awarded $645,158 through the State of Ohio’s Choose Ohio First (COF) program, a statewide initiative expanding opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The funding will empower Walsh to prepare students for high-demand careers and contribute to Ohio’s workforce development by fostering innovation and driving economic growth.
“This funding enables Walsh University to enhance our STEM programs and provide students with an education that directly aligns with the needs of today’s industries,” said Walsh University President Tim Collins. “We are committed to equipping our students with the skills and experiences they need to build meaningful careers and contribute to Ohio’s dynamic and growing workforce.”
“Choose Ohio First continues to provide students who stay in Ohio to continue their education with the opportunity to succeed in high-demand STEM fields,” said Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor Mike Duffey. “This newest award demonstrates Walsh University’s commitment to giving its students in such fields as computer science, biology, and chemistry the tools for a successful future.”
Choose Ohio First is a cornerstone of the state’s strategy to develop STEM talent, with the Fiscal Year 2025 funding round committing $32.5 million in scholarships from Academic Year (AY) 2026 through AY30. This is in addition to the $200 million previously allocated for scholarships from AY21 through AY29. By supporting high-quality STEM programs and fostering partnerships with Ohio’s employers, the initiative addresses workforce shortages and ensures long-term economic growth.
Since its launch in 2008, the COF program has increased STEM enrollment and graduation rates statewide through scholarships and hands-on learning opportunities like internships, co-ops, and research projects. These efforts strengthen Ohio’s ability to meet workforce demands in critical fields such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, information technology, and aerospace.
Walsh University was selected for its strong record of preparing students for impactful careers in fields such as healthcare, finance, data analytics, and technology. The University’s interdisciplinary approach, emphasis on hands-on learning, and partnerships with local industries ensure its graduates are well-equipped to join Ohio’s talent pipeline and growing economy.
