As Walsh University kicks off the Year of Community, emphasizing its core values, students like Talia McLin are already feeling the impact. As a first-generation college student, Talia has found her journey profoundly enriched by the strong connections and supportive environment at Walsh.

Growing up in Euclid, Ohio, Talia chose Walsh University for its perfect blend of a small, close-knit community and a larger institution with diverse opportunities. “The genuine connections I’ve made with peers, professors, and staff have created an environment where collaboration and personal growth are encouraged,” Talia shared.

Talia’s academic journey at Walsh has been marked by exploration and growth. She started as a Predental major, then switched to Government and Foreign Affairs before discovering her true passion in Digital Marketing. “My journey has taught me that it’s perfectly okay to change directions and explore different fields until you find what truly excites you,” she said. Her creativity and love for content creation, especially in managing her own nail business, led her to marketing, a field where her skills and passions naturally align.

Throughout her time at Walsh, Talia embraced the university’s commitment to community by staying active in various roles that shaped her personal and academic growth. She served as a Resident Assistant for two years, gaining valuable leadership skills, and was involved in the Black Student Union. As a dedicated member of the Track & Field team for four years, she also built strong bonds with her teammates. “Each of these roles played a big part in shaping my college experience and personal growth,” she said.

Walsh University’s mission of leadership in service and values-based education has been integral to Talia’s development. “The emphasis on an international perspective and ethical leadership has broadened my understanding of global issues and the importance of responsible, compassionate leadership,” she said. Her liberal arts education has encouraged her to think critically and engage with diverse viewpoints, strengthening her commitment to service and social responsibility.

Talia's journey has been deeply influenced by her family’s support, particularly her mother’s unwavering belief in her. “My mom is my biggest cheerleader,” Talia reflects. “Her influence has been a guiding force in my life, giving me the strength to overcome obstacles and stay focused on my path. #TammyStrong.”

Walsh University has also played a crucial role in helping Talia achieve her goals. During her junior year, she attended an internship fair organized by Walsh, which led to a summer position as an Internal Audit Intern at PNC Bank. This experience provided her with valuable skills and insights directly applicable to her career aspirations in marketing and entertainment.

As Talia looks to the future, she has ambitious plans. After graduation, she intends to move to California and pursue an MBA online, a decision that will allow her to gain practical experience while continuing her education. Her ultimate goal is to work in marketing for the entertainment industry, particularly at Walt Disney, where her aunt currently works. “I’m excited about the opportunity to blend my education with hands-on experience in such a dynamic and creative environment,” she shared.

As the oldest of four siblings, Talia carries the responsibility of being a role model and setting an example for her younger brothers and sisters. Despite the challenges she’s faced, she has persevered and is now nearing the finish line of her college journey. “These experiences have shaped my resilience and determination, driving me to succeed and inspire those around me.”

Talia’s story is one of resilience, discovery, and the power of a strong support system. She encourages prospective students to remain open-minded and flexible as they navigate their own paths, offering this advice: “Use college as a chance to explore different interests and get involved in various activities. Finding your way often means trying a few different things before you settle on what truly excites you.”
